Butterfly Clicking — Guide, CPS & Server Bans

Butterfly clicking is a mouse technique that produces 15–22 clicks per second by alternating the index and middle fingers on the same mouse button. It's the highest-CPS technique short of drag clicking, but most competitive Minecraft servers including Hypixel ban or restrict it because the dual-actuation pattern is detectable.

What is butterfly clicking?

Butterfly clicking is a manual high-CPS technique where the player alternates the index and middle fingers rapidly on the same mouse button, producing 15–22 clicks per second. The name comes from the appearance of the two fingers fluttering. Unlike jitter clicking (which uses one finger and forearm tension), butterfly clicking uses two fingers in rapid alternation — reaching higher CPS but with a detectable two-beat pattern. Hypixel's Watchdog anti-cheat flags consistent butterfly patterns and many other competitive Minecraft servers do the same. Butterfly clicking is allowed in single-player Minecraft, casual servers, Roblox clicker simulators, and any non-competitive use. The technique requires a mouse with fast switch reset — optical-switch mice work best.

The technique

How do you butterfly click?

  1. 1

    Position both fingers

Place your index finger and middle finger side-by-side on the left mouse button. Both fingers must reach the actuation point.

  2. 2

    Alternate rapidly

Press with one finger, lift, press with the other — in rapid alternation. The pattern is index-middle-index-middle.

  3. 3

    Stay near the actuation point

Don't fully release the button between presses. Hover just above the actuation point so each press is minimal travel.

  4. 4

    Use the right mouse

Optical switches (Razer Viper, Glorious Model O) reset faster than mechanical. Mechanical switches debounce-cap most butterfly clickers at 14–15 CPS.

Is butterfly clicking banned on Hypixel?

Yes — Hypixel bans butterfly clicking on most game modes, including Bedwars, Skywars, and competitive PvP. Mineplex, CubeCraft, and most major networks follow the same policy. The reason: the two-beat alternation pattern is statistically detectable. Server-side anti-cheats like Watchdog log click intervals and recognize the "short-long-short-long" pattern characteristic of butterfly clicking. Drag clicking is also banned everywhere. Jitter clicking (10–14 CPS) is the highest CPS technique that's reliably allowed on competitive Minecraft servers. For non-competitive use (single-player, idle games, Roblox clicker sims, AFK farms on servers that allow it), butterfly clicking is fine. For pure throughput in non-PvP contexts, an auto clicker like OP Auto Clicker at 100+ CPS beats every manual technique with zero physical strain.

Common questions

Butterfly clicking — common questions

Verified butterfly clicking records over 5 seconds hover around 22–25 CPS. Some unverified claims reach 30 CPS but typically without third-party verification. The physical ceiling is roughly 25 CPS even with optimal mouse + technique — beyond that the two-finger alternation becomes unsustainable.

Higher peak CPS, but banned on more servers. Butterfly hits 15–22 CPS vs jitter's 10–14 CPS. Jitter is allowed on Hypixel and most competitive servers; butterfly is banned on most. For competitive Minecraft, jitter is the better choice. For idle/single-player use, butterfly's higher CPS wins.

Less than drag clicking, more than jitter. Optical switches handle butterfly clicking fine for hundreds of hours. Mechanical switches debounce-cap your CPS and may double-actuate at high speeds, registering as 'ghost clicks'.

Most players reach 15 CPS in 2–4 weeks. Reaching 20+ CPS requires an optical-switch mouse and 1–2 months of practice. The bottleneck is finger coordination, not strength.

Yes — server-side anti-cheats log click intervals and detect the alternating two-beat pattern. Even with skill variance, the pattern is statistically distinct from regular or jitter clicking. Hypixel's Watchdog and most major server anti-cheats flag butterfly clicking automatically.
