A mouse speed test measures how fast your mouse and hand combine to produce input. There are three separate metrics: click rate (CPS), input latency (ms), and polling rate (Hz). This guide covers what each measures, how to test it, and what scores are considered good.

What is a mouse speed test?

A mouse speed test benchmarks your mouse's real-world performance across three dimensions: click rate (clicks per second, measured by CPS tests), input latency (milliseconds from physical click to on-screen registration), and polling rate (how often the mouse reports position to the OS, measured in Hz). Modern gaming mice typically poll at 1000 Hz (1 report per millisecond), older office mice at 125–500 Hz. Input latency on a good wired gaming mouse is 1–5 ms; wireless mice add 2–8 ms depending on the receiver. Human click rate averages 4–7 CPS untrained, up to 14 CPS with jitter clicking. The three metrics are independent — a fast polling rate doesn't help if your hand clicks slowly, and high CPS doesn't help if input latency is 30 ms. Full benchmark tests all three separately.

How do you run a mouse speed test?

    Take the 10-second CPS test. This measures your effective click rate — the metric that matters most for gaming.

    Use zowie.benq.com/mouse-rate-checker (external). Move your mouse in a small circle. The site shows real-time Hz — you want 1000 Hz stable for gaming.

    Test reaction time

    humanbenchmark.com/tests/reactiontime combines mouse latency with your human reaction. Expect 200–300 ms on a good wired gaming mouse.

    Check DPI accuracy

    For serious testing use MouseTester (Windows). Verifies your mouse's rated DPI matches actual counts. Off-brand mice often report 3000 DPI but deliver 2400.

Only marginally. A 1000 Hz mouse can register up to 1000 clicks per second theoretically, but human clicking caps around 14–22 CPS regardless. Polling rate matters more for aim tracking (smoother cursor updates) than for click rate.
